Wedding Cake Toppers – A Pretty Vintage Couple

Wedding Season is upon us again. And it’s safe to say I get booked up well in advance for my personalised Wedding Cake Toppers. I have three orders on my books for 2020 already!

Here is a lovely order from last year. I can safely share it with you now that the Bride and Groom’s day is over!

When Susie sent her pictures to work from, I was delighted to see all the little details I’d be adding. These really make it a truly personalised wedding cake topper!

I couldn’t wait for her slot to come around so that I could get to work on them. As always, I start by drawing out the designs on the dolls until I am happy. Next, I make them permanent by burning the lines into the wood with my pyrography iron.

Then, I can can get to the laborious but ever-so-rewarding work of adding the colour to bring them to life. My Bride and Groom wedding cake toppers use a variety of materials in addition to my usual coloured pencil. This could include paint, liquid pearls, fine glitter and metallic and pearlescent finishes.

She had a wonderful veil. Not all Brides chose to include them as they can obscure some of the dress details, so it was nice to be able to create my first one in a little while.

She is also wearing a beautiful, sparkling crystal vintage belt. I loved bringing this to life by getting my sparkles out! (That sounds like a terrible euphemism – sorry!!!)

Unfortunately my photos don’t do just how pretty that little dress and belt are, with it’s painted lace, and pearls created using my special mediums.

But luckily for you, I caught it on video 🙂

It’s deliberately out of focus at some points to demonstrate the light catching the sparkles. You can’t see this whilst it’s in focus! The video also shows the sheen I use to give the effect of a veil more closely.

The groom also has lots of attention to detail! Look at that tiny pocket watch on a chain.

The suit is a gorgeous navy, with a purple checked pattern woven through it. What an absolute treat for me to recreate! You know how much I love a pattern!! I think this dapper fellow is one of my favourite grooms that I have created to date.

Susie kindly sent me a couple of pictures of their wedding day and allowed me to share them with you. As always, it’s great to see my cake toppers out in “the wild”!

Perfect Personalised Bridesmaids Gifts – Peg Dolls!

I’ve always thought that my peg dolls would make perfect personalised bridesmaid gifts, but never had the time to act on it. Luckily for me, a customer had the same idea, and asked me to make a personalised peg doll for each of her bridesmaids.

Of course I jumped at the chance! I was excited on receiving her photos as each of the dresses were different. They were all united by the same, soft blush colour, but each had a different style.

Two of the dresses were full length, while one was tea-dress length. The bodices of the left and centre dresses were fully sequined. Yay for breaking out my sparkly special effect finish! The third bridesmaid bodice was embroidered, with a more subtle spatter of sparkles and sequins here and there.

The backs of each dress were different too, and each girl was having a different hairstyle. However, little white flowers thread amongst the strands of hair were a common theme. I loved adding these differing details to each peg doll, making them a truly personalised bridesmaid gift.

The skirts were made of layers of beautiful light tulle fabric. So I carefully used water colour, adding a gentle base layer of colour, and then pencils to add the effect of soft pleats and layers on top.

The matching bouquets of wine-coloured gerberas, white carnations and gypsophila were the finishing touches for each peg doll.

Wedding Peg Doll Personalised Gift

 I’m sure you all know by now I love commissions that involves creating a wedding peg doll or two!

So when my business friend Stacey, the amazing clay artist behind Stacey’s World, got in touch to ask if I could make her a special wedding gift she got a big thumbs up from me. Her friends had recently got married, enjoying a dream destination wedding. With this in mind I knew this would be a fun wedding peg doll set to work on!

The bride was photographed wearing a really light and elegant dress. Its’ simplicity was perfect for all that sunshine and heat I bet! She also had a gorgeous bunch of colourful gerberas. Such happy and bright flowers!

There were lots of lovely details that really helped me to personalise her wedding peg doll. The bride wore quite distinctive glasses, which always helps. In addition to this, she had a beautiful sparkly tiara which was lovely to recreate. She also was wearing pearl and crystal necklace, and a pearl bracelet and earrings set. Any opportunity to bust out my specialised pearl and crystal finishes is a great one in my books!

It really was a lovely commission to work on. It was refreshing to create the peg dolls as a gift AFTER the wedding day and to be able to work from such lovely, happy photos!

Game of Thrones Wedding Cake Toppers

I’m pretty certain that Game of Thrones needs no introduction! The show, based on the George RR Martin Song of Ice and Fire novels, has had us gripped since it first aired in 2011. Who doesn’t love a bit of kings, queens and dragons escapism every once in a while?

So it was only a matter of time before I was contacted to create some Game of Thrones Wedding Cake Toppers!

With just a few days left until Season 7, now seems the perfect time to share  them with you.

Nadine and Richard are huge fans of the show. While their wedding was going to be a traditional ceremony during the day, the evening was to take a bit of a fantastical twist. Nadine was changing into a replica Khaleesi dress, while her new husband would be sporting a suit of armour.

The couples’ two beloved cats were to feature on the cake too!

The Khaleesi dress was SO much fun to recreate!  I love having the opportunity to break out my specialised finishes! I used some gorgeous metallic gold here to pick out the details on her chain metal belt.

The lengths of sheer fabric hanging from her shoulders down her back called for some of my pearlised top coat. Lovely! I love working on little details like this. The back of each of my peg dolls receive just as much attention as the front.

Nick’s outfit was just as fun to customise. They requested a specific coat of arms to reflect his family name. It might just be some of the tiniest details I’ve had to create to date!

Of course, the finished cake looked fantastic! It was created for them by Jenny Cooper of Coop Cakes. My  Game of Thrones wedding cake toppers perfectly matched the tiers’ themes of winter and of cogs, which are the iconic feature of the opening credits of the show.

Making Cake Toppers for a Top Cake Maker

One of my favourite things to make are always requests for personalised peg doll wedding cake toppers. I may just have mentioned it once or twice before! I love playing a tiny part in a couple’s special day, working with them to bring their ideas to life.

Quite often there are lots of special, sentimental details to include, and I love finding out the stories behind them. Often, I get to see the Bride’s dress before most other people, and I feel like the keeper of many special, beautiful secrets!

However, one day an email landed in my inbox which was a bit different. It was a request for a bride and groom cake topper, but it wasn’t from a bride-to-be. There were no dress or hairstyle pictures.

But, there was the same level of excitement from my potential customer!

The email was, infact, from a lovely Baker called Michele, who runs Icing on the Cake in Somerset. She had an idea in her mind for a cake that she wished to showcase at Wedding Fayres, and it required peg doll cake toppers. A little Google search led her to my website, so she emailed to see if I could create her a Bride and Groom.

How exciting to be able to create one of my favourite products, but with more or less free-reign design wise!

Michele had spotted a dress style that she liked on one of my previous cake toppers, that she felt would fit well with her cake design. I recreated a similar style dress, and added a pretty bouquet of pink roses.

I chose a navy suit, similar to the one she had spotted. But as I had a little freedom with the details, I decided to give the groom a floral tie – a look which is rising in popularity right now. It was so much fun making the repeating pattern of tiny pink roses with their little green leaves. Of course, a matching pocket square was in order too!

Michele was really pleased with the result, sending me a photo of the peg dolls on top of her lace-trimmed cake. We’re hoping to collaborate with each other again in the near future.
