International Women’s Day 2018 – A celebration in Peg Dolls

March the 8th marks the annual celebration of Women through International Women’s Day.  Not only is it a day to commemorate the progress and campaigning that women have done within the equal rights movement, but with gender parity cited to still be 200 years away, it also aims to ensure that we continue to #pressforprogress so that the plight of women and girls who are denied their equality, rights and freedom will have their voices heard. I truly love this job that I have carved out for myself, to suit my needs and my lifestyle, and to provide for my husband and I. A favourite part of my work is seeing the photos of such a rich variety of women pass my desk as I create their little peg doll portraits.  Each woman has their own story to tell and her own strengths carved from the tapestry of her life experience. Each has a different reason for having their peg doll created. And each peg doll is a celebration of that woman; be it a birthday, mothers day, graduation, becoming a mother, or showing how loved and appreciated they are.

A Personalised Peg Dolls Proposal!

It’s Valentines Day, so what is more fitting than sharing a romantic story involving my personalised peg dolls?!

I was thrilled last year when the partner of my old Uni friend got in touch asking if I could make a personalised peg dolls set of their little family. Every commission is lovely, but there’s something even more magical about making peg dolls for special friends.

He had one special request for the set. Could I make my friend in her Wonder Woman costume? Well, of course I could! We all know (almost) anything goes here at Pink Elephant Crafts!

I’d presumed that he was just getting very organised and ordering a lovely Christmas present. So imagine my absolute delight when my friend text me these photos!

She walked into the lounge to find three little piles of gifts, each with a wooden plaque. They read “Wonder Woman,” “Wonder Woman,” and …….. “Wonder Wife?”

Sam really is a Wonder Woman. And the character had always had a special meaning to them both.

Isn’t that an amazing and romantic way to propose for a superhero-loving couple?

Game of Thrones Wedding Cake Toppers

I’m pretty certain that Game of Thrones needs no introduction! The show, based on the George RR Martin Song of Ice and Fire novels, has had us gripped since it first aired in 2011. Who doesn’t love a bit of kings, queens and dragons escapism every once in a while?

So it was only a matter of time before I was contacted to create some Game of Thrones Wedding Cake Toppers!

With just a few days left until Season 7, now seems the perfect time to share  them with you.

Nadine and Richard are huge fans of the show. While their wedding was going to be a traditional ceremony during the day, the evening was to take a bit of a fantastical twist. Nadine was changing into a replica Khaleesi dress, while her new husband would be sporting a suit of armour.

The couples’ two beloved cats were to feature on the cake too!

The Khaleesi dress was SO much fun to recreate!  I love having the opportunity to break out my specialised finishes! I used some gorgeous metallic gold here to pick out the details on her chain metal belt.

The lengths of sheer fabric hanging from her shoulders down her back called for some of my pearlised top coat. Lovely! I love working on little details like this. The back of each of my peg dolls receive just as much attention as the front.

Nick’s outfit was just as fun to customise. They requested a specific coat of arms to reflect his family name. It might just be some of the tiniest details I’ve had to create to date!

Of course, the finished cake looked fantastic! It was created for them by Jenny Cooper of Coop Cakes. My  Game of Thrones wedding cake toppers perfectly matched the tiers’ themes of winter and of cogs, which are the iconic feature of the opening credits of the show.

Superhero Peg Dolls

On this day in 1936, the world was introduced to its first tights-wearing, skin-tight costume-clad superhero. No, not Superman. Not Batman. Or Spiderman.

The purple-clothed Phantom was from the imagination of comic strip creator Lee Falk and the first character of this kind to wear a costume to mask his true identity. Falk’s pioneering character set the dress code for the leagues of lycra-loving heroes and masked mystery men that have followed and entertained us ever since.

My husband is a massive superhero fan, and as I’m sure you know by now, I’m a tad partial to creating peg dolls. So I LOVE it when our two interests collide and we get to create superhero peg dolls!

As you can imagine, I was thrilled to be asked to make a couple of peg dolls that revealed the recipients’ inner superheroes as a special birthday gift! What an amazing project to be able to undertake!

Superman and Wonder Woman costumes were the order of the day, hidden under their suits.

“Superman” as his sister lovingly referred to him, had to of course be wearing a sharp navy suit.

Meanwhile, the other peg doll was wearing a stylish grey herringbone suit.

Needless to say, I really enjoyed creating the texture on the jacket and trousers.

Of course, no superhero is complete without a trusty sidekick. So to complete the set I created Dexter, their adorable little dog.

These would also make the perfect Father’s Day present for your Super Dad! Father’s day this year in the UK is on June 18th. Plenty of time to place an order!
